Khalil, who was released from a Louisiana immigration jail in June, had petitioned to expand his travel beyond New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Louisiana, and Michigan. His lawyer, Alina Das, emphasized during a virtual hearing, “This case fundamentally revolves around First Amendment rights. Mahmoud wants to engage in public discourse on critical issues.”
However, the government’s attorney, Aniello DeSimone, opposed the request, arguing that Khalil could participate in events remotely. “Why can’t he attend these events virtually?” DeSimone questioned, a point that underscores the tension between security concerns and constitutional freedoms.
