Ralfy, what a remarkable discovery you've made! I wonder how many other great European films there are that we haven't found yet! And the poster is absolutely gorgeous! The message below appears at the beginning of the video. It's the first of four messages which pertain to the project which rescued this fine motion picture. I was impressed by the fact that this film was both preserved and restore by dedicated professionals. I watched a few minutes of the movie at various points during the film, and I was impressed by the cinematography and the acting. I must confess, however, that when I'm forced to read subtitles I don't enjoy a movie as much as when I can focus of on the actors instead of spending all my time staring at the bottom of the screen and trying to keep ups with the subtitles. That's why I prefer movies dubbed into English, regardless of the objections some folks have about that option. Anyway, thanks, Ralfy!_____________________________ Is there no man on Earth who has the wisdom and innocence of a child? ~ The Space Children (1958)

A visionary work of Eastern Bloc science fiction, this mesmerizing Czechoslovak adaptation of a novel by Stanisław Lem melds Cold War ideology and utopian futurism into a tour de force of space-age modernism. In the year 2163, a band of astronauts embarks on a fifteen-year voyage deep into outer space, in hopes of discovering life in another galaxy. It’s a perilous journey during which they will confront the wreckage of the twentieth century, the chilling vastness of the cosmos, and their own mortality. A triumph of avant-garde production design that served as a model for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ikarie XB 1—long known internationally only through a mangled and dubbed reedit—is a singular sci-fi landmark that finds both terror and wonder in the unknown.
